“The best thing about being a student of Dr. Lau’s is the freedom to design my own experiments and develop my own ideas as a researcher,” Jennifer Cohen says. Jenny says she chose The University of Arizona to pursue her doctoral degree because of the college’s wide variety of major research interests and numerous constructive collaborations. “I chose to study pharmacology and toxicology because the field is at the forefront of modern medicine, working to develop and test new drugs that have the potential to combat serious human diseases.” Cohen wants to become a toxicologist so she can analyze the harmful effects of drugs and chemicals on biological systems. She is studying pharmacology to learn drug mechanisms of action at the molecular and cellular level. Since being admitted to the Pharmacology and Toxicology Department in 2004, Jenny has been the recipient of the Glen W. Vanice and Keith G. Reid Award for Scientific Research in Biomedical Fields (2007), the Society of Toxicology Graduate Student Travel Support (2007), the Women in Toxicology Student Achievement Award (2007), and the Yuma Friends of Arizona Health Sciences Center Young Investigator Research Award (2005). In addition, she was awarded First Place Poster at the Mountain West Society of Toxicology meeting this Fall. Jenny is also the 2006-2007 College of Pharmacy representative to the UA Graduate and Professional Student Council. |
